Here’s everything you need to know about ACP faces cleaning and maintenance:

  1. TLC is key. Be Gentle.
    At Viva we use International standard paints and aluminium coil, which do not succumb to scratches and indentation easily. There is no need to use hard cleaning solutions, solvents etc. Regular cleaning using a sponge/cloth and detergent water is more than sufficient. The aim is to only remove dirt and grit from the surface.
  2. Mind the time.
    Take note that as Aluminium is a metal, it is subject to small contraction and expansion based on heat level at certain times of the day. Ensure that you choose a time where it is neither too hot nor too cold so that you can cover the maximum surface without compromise.
  3. Dealing with soil
    If the building is in an area that is prone to soil, dirt and grit, which is often the case in industrial zones and city centres, one needs to be mindful about creating scratches. For this reason, a pre-cleaning set up where forceful water rinse is done from top to bottom. Use water and first rinse the panel with moderate pressure. If the soil is sticky and adhering, then you need to go for a mild detergent solution. If the surfaces are blackened due to pollution, then you will need to use detergent.
  4. Dealing with pollution
    For dealing with pollution and to restore shine, one needs to use cleaner or detergent. Using a top-down approach, apply cleaner on the surface. However, dripping of cleaner on to the bottom panels needs to be minimised. Remove drips and splashes immediately!
  5. Choosing right cleaner/detergent
    Maintaining a pH level of 8 in the water is important. Large deviations from this can result in heavy damage to the panel. Before starting the cleaning procedure, make sure you apply the detergent water to a small patch and leave for one minute to check if there could be any damage. Once the safety of the detergent is confirmed, proceed with the cleaning process. Maximum 5% cleaning solution should be used.
  6. Choosing cleaning material
    It is very important to note that your cleaning rags and or sponges are themselves free of grit and dirt. Cleaning with abrasive materials can cause more scratches.
  7. Cleaning process
    Horizontal motions first and then vertical motions is the preferred method. Make sure your sponge is thoroughly cleaned and dried. Use a lint-free cloth to remove the excess water after cleaning.
  8. The Dos and Don’ts
    Do not use MFK based cleaning agents, caustic soda, potassium hydroxide and acid as you should be aware that ACP sheets are lacquered. If construction is still going on in the building, cover the previously installed ACP panels with something as it is difficult to remove sealants and machine oils from ACP panels.

Given than ACP is widely used in interior and exterior spaces that require the usage of fire retardant, wind-resistant materials, it is very important that the purchased panels are of good quality. Unfortunately, due to the rising popularity of ACP sheets, many companies are procuring Chinese products that are sold saying they have manufactured products at cheap or equivalent rates in the market. It is very important that customers stay wary of fakes in the market for the sake of safety and quality. The below checklist allows you to easily identify between fake and good-quality ACP sheets:

  1. According to international requirements, the inner panel of ACP must be 3mm, the outer wall panel must be 4mm or more, and the thickness of the aluminium must be 0.5 mm in thickness. To check this criterion, measure against the cross-section of samples provided to you, using a Vernier calipers. They can also be tested by a third-party testing laboratory such as Thomas Bell Wright

ACP sheets must have ripple-free, bubble-free smooth surfaces that don’t scratch or indent easily. Use a key to check the same. Ensure that the surface does not show any obvious defects. Good quality ACP sheets must have a scratch resistance of up to 4H.

Try to fold the corner of the ACP sheet. If the ACP – PE breaks very easily, it is not of good quality and uses non-standard cores. It can also show whether the adhesive used between the PE-core and Aluminium is of good quality or not. If you are going for large quantities, ask for a sample and smash against a table. If it breaks easily, don’t buy it.

Good quality ACP sheets are coloured using the hot-pressing process so that the paint doesn’t peel off easily and the surface is scratch and indent free. Try to rub two ACP sheets against each other along the surface. If the paint comes off easily, the ACP is of inferior quality and uses substandard materials.

To check the paint on the panel, you can also perform a drip test. Butanone exposes the Fluorocarbon coating on the exterior panel and xylene does the same for the inner coating. Wipe the reagent after 5 minutes and see if the bottom is exposed, so that you are sure that good quality paint is being used.

Use a lighter to burn the sheet on one corner. If real PE is used, there will no impurities left behind. If some soot or other materials are left behind after burning, fake or shoddy PE material is being used.

Most important of all, ask your manufacturer questions! ISO certified products are of premium quality and guarantee that you are paying the right price for the product you are purchasing.

For FR certifications, look for tests such as NFPA285, EN-13501, ASTM E119 which assures adherence to nationally and internationally recognized fire standards.

Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) has been a popular material for building facades as well as cladding for more than two decades. ACP consists of two high-strength aluminium sheets which sandwich a low density, insulating core. Hence, they are also known as sandwich panels.

The original purpose behind their design and creation was to use it as a material for signage. However, today ACP find diverse applications like wall coverings, architectural claddings, interior decorations, false ceilings, etc.

So, below is the history and evolution of ACP and how it came to become one of the most important building material used in various construction and architectural projects.

History of Aluminium Composite Panels

The Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) was originally introduced as a joint-invention between companies known as Alusingen and BASF in 1969. Later Alusuisse bought Alusingen, which was eventually obtained by another international firm named Alcan (currently Rio Tinto) in 2000.

In spite of its introduction in the 1960s, it was only until the mid-1980s that the mainstream architectural industry discovered the properties of ACP as a building material and started its extensive use. Moreover, the widespread use of ACP in the commercial and residential buildings began in the early 1990s. It was then realised that it could reduce costs and enhance architectural performance.

ACP Brands through time

The first form of Aluminium Composite Panels that came to existence was marketed under the brand name ‘Alucobond®,’. The manufacturing process was patented by Alusingen for 20 years, between 1971 and 1991. The brand name (Aluminium –Composite — Bonding) was itself a representation of how the panel was made; by bonding the aluminium alloy to a composite material. It is for the same reason that the original aluminium composite panels were also known as Alucobond.

After the patent expired, many prominent names of the construction industry began the ACP manufacturing process. As a result, several significant brands emerged, like Alcoa (brand name Reynobond), Mitsubishi (brand name Alpolic), Etem (brand name Etalbond), etc.

Change in Composition of Aluminium Composite Panels

Even though many ACP brands emerged, the product did not change in essence. The significant changes occurred in the composition of the aluminium panels, which was modified based on the required features of the panel and their area of use.

However, when some high-rise buildings got burnt due to the involvement of ACP, the flammable nature of its core material came to fore. Since then, the core material has been altered to constitute non-flammable material with a low combustion risk.

The overall thickness of the panels used currently is in the range of 3-6 mm (0.12-0.24 in.), and that of the aluminium facings is in the range of 0.2- 0.8 mm (0.008- 0.032 in.) The insulated core has been developed from several different materials, but there are three general categories today in which every kind of core belongs:

  • PE Cores – These cores are made of 100% polyethylene (PE) and are flammable.

  • FR Cores – These cores are made of a composite material containing a high percentage (70% to 90%) of mineral wool/ rock fiber/ rock wool, which are non-combustible and act as a fire retardant.

  • Aluminium Cores – These cores are either made of an aluminium honeycomb structure or solid aluminium.

To make them more suitable for various kinds of applications, ACPs have been developed with different types of paints and coatings, as shown below:

  • PE/FR Constructional/Architectural Panel sheets coated with PVDF resin, (XT/ High Durable) polyester paint.

  • Panel sheets coated with Nano PVDF

  • Digital Printing/ Signage Panel sheets coated with FEVE resin or high-quality polyester.

Since the modifications carried out with the core and panel quality, several ACP products have launched which show many architectural advantages over other building materials:
